Not everyone will understand why we homeschool. I have made my peace with that. But I will be honest, some days are harder than others, especially for the children.

Sometimes my kids feel left out. Everyone else seems to be heading off to school, and somewhere along the way someone always asks the questions. When are you going to school? Are you not too big to be home? Should you not be studying by now?

I want to answer all of those questions at once, gently. Who said you cannot study at home? There are so many successful adults who were homeschooled, so many children thriving right now in living rooms and kitchens and gardens. Let us stop making these children feel like they are missing something. More often than not, they are gaining something.

That is exactly why a certain book landed so well in our home.

A book that shows learning is everywhere

What I loved about Homeschool Biryani is the way it captures a truth I live every single day: learning happens anywhere.

The story shows children learning about different vegetables while helping gather the ingredients for biryani from the garden. It turns into a maths lesson through counting potatoes. It becomes a lesson in life skills, the kind of thing a classroom does not always have time to teach. A single pot of biryani becomes science, maths, responsibility, and togetherness, all at once.

If you have ever doubted whether the ordinary moments count as education, this book is a warm reminder that they absolutely do.

Homeschool children socialize too

Here is the other thing I loved, and the thing I wish more people understood. Homeschool children are not locked up in the house.

Homeschool Biryani takes you through the beautiful field trips and the projects these children did together with their friends. It shows the community that homeschooling families build, the outings, the shared learning, the friendships. Our children are out in the world, learning from it and with other people, more than most realize.

What it sparked in my own home

The best sign of a good book is what a child does after reading it. My son closed this one and immediately started planning. Now he wants us to throw a "not back to school" party. He wants us to make a homeschool yearbook of our own.

That is the magic of a story that reflects a child's real life back to him. It does not just entertain. It affirms. It tells him that his way of learning is worthy of a party and a yearbook and a place on the shelf.

A book worth adding to your shelf

If you are a homeschooling family, or simply raising children who learn in their own way, Homeschool Biryani is a beautiful, affirming read. It is published by Ruqaya's Bookshelf, and it earned its place in our home the moment my son started planning his party.

Learning happens anywhere. This little book says it better than I ever could.

Rooted in faith. Growing in knowledge.
